SciCan has just released a new sterilizer to fill out their Statim sterilizer line. The Statim 7000, SciCan’s chamber alternative, builds off of the enormous successes of the Statim 2000 and Statim 5000.
The Statim 7000 is able to accommodate IMS cassettes up to 8 inches x 11 inches. It can sterilize two wrapped cassettes of this size, and can do it in only 17 minutes. SciCan has also pioneered a new steam drying system which will dry the same cassettes in only 12 minutes. For those users who do not use IMS cassettes, the Statim 7000 can sterilize a load of unwrapped instruments in 12 minutes.
One major difference between the old Statim sterilizers (2000 and 5000) and the new Statim 7000 (shown above, photo courtesy Scican) is in the water requirements. While the older machines required steam distilled water with less than 5ppm of total dissolved solids, the new machine accepts tap water. Internally the Statim 7000 filters the water to a higher quality, making it suitable for use in sterilization.
Most of the other functions remain similar to the older versions of the Statim, such as the display and simple touchpad interface. SciCan has added a RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tag to the cassette seal which will track the number of cycles that have been run on a seal. The machine will then inform you when the seal has completed a set number of cycles and instruct you to have the seal replaced.
The total chamber size is 6.3L, which pales in comparison to an actual round chamber sterilizer. The Adec Lisa MB17 for example, has a 17L chamber capacity. However, with a complete cycle on the new Statim 7000 taking 29 minutes, and a Lisa cycle taking approximately 45 minutes, there is a significant time savings.

This machine will appeal to users who have need of a sterilizer for just a few IMS cassette trays, or who want Statim’s speed with a larger load capacity. Dental offices which are heavily invested in IMS cassettes should probably investigate round chamber sterilizers such as the Lisa, or one of Midmark’s offerings.
